Keeping Up with Facebook

The rules are changing again. Do you know how your Facebook marketing is being impacted?

Just when you think you’ve got Facebook all figured out, new features are added, others are tweaked, and suddenly you are one of the millions frustrated by the latest round of innovations.  But as intimidating as these changes can be, they do represent a shift toward content sharing and engagement that can impact your brand page and your EdgeRank.

Here’s a quick look at recent Facebook changes that affect brand pages:

Page Insights Analytic Tool:

Page Insights give you the information you need to understand what the people you are reaching care about.  With Page Insights, Facebook allows you to:

  • Assess your page’s performance
  • Determine which content resonates with your audience
  • Optimize content so that your audience will tell their friends about you

For example, you can see which type of posts—videos, posts, surveys, etc.—are getting the most attention so that you can increase the potential for your posts to go viral.

To assess your audience size and level of engagement, Facebook provides four metrics on your Insights tab:

  1. Total Likes
  2. Friends of Fans
  3. Talking About This
  4. Total Reach

Total Likes can be set for a particular date range and gives you the number of “likes” as of the last day of the date range you select.

Friends of Fans tells you how many friends your fans have as of the last day of the date range you select.  This gives you an idea of your potential audience, or the potential total reach of posts shared by fans among their friends.

Talking About This provides useful information to help you measure the conversation and engagement that is taking place on your brand page.  It shows the number of people who created a story about your Page during the date range you select.   Per Facebook, “a story is created when someone:

  • Likes your Page
  • Likes, comments on, or shares your Page post
  • Answers a Question you’ve asked
  • Responds to your event
  • Mentions your Page
  • Tags your Page in a photo
  • Checks in or recommends your Place”

Total Reach gives you the total number of people exposed to any content associated with your page within the date range you select.  This includes any ads or sponsored stories that point to your page.
